Greenwich + Docklands International Festival Hits London This June

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy yourself in London. With so many London events coming up in June, it might be difficult to decide how to spend your spare hours. But, if there’s one event you should be sure to mark your calendar for this month, it’s the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival (GDIF) that starts 21 June and spans over a week, wrapping up on the 29th.

This festival is amazing for a number of reasons. First off, it’s FREE, which is a great deal when you look at ticket prices for some of the other fests. Second, this art festival is London’s largest offering of no-cost outdoor theatre.

GDIF: Then & Now

Since its inception in 1996, GDIF has produced and hosted hundreds of fabulous and breathtaking outdoor theatre shows in Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. Last year, over 200 free performances took place, the festival was rumoured to have attracted some 80,000 guests over 10 days.

This incredibly unique outdoor art festival was founded by Bradley Hemmings, and he remains the Artistic Director to this day. Hemmings, who was the Co-Artistic Director of the Paralympic Ceremonies last year in London, said in a recent blog article, “GDIF has always been influenced by the example of European outdoor festivals.”

He went on to say, “There’s something quintessentially European about the whole proposition of public spaces being creatively disrupted and transformed with free outdoor performances.”

What’s on This Year

As the festival opens on midsummer’s day, it’s really a nice opportunity for some early summer outdoor fun with friends and family.

This year, the GDIF’s mission is to re-ignite the spirit of Olympic London, and they plan to do so by offering a programme full of jaw-dropping visual attractions, avant-garde outdoor theatre performances, and the most extensive lineup of outdoor dance performances in the UK.

With plenty of family-friendly entertainment and impressive art installations, as well as one of the most diverse programmes you’ll find at any festival, the GDIF will inspire you to submerge yourself in the democratic spirit of outdoor theatre while your eyes are lit up by incredible artistic sights.

There are so many events to attend at GDIF 2013! Check out this overview and browse through it to see which events you’d most like to attend.
